This week’s episode comes during a time of uncertainty for the restaurant industry. Will we make it out of this? If we do, will customers come back for cocktails? Is this a Second Great Depression? While those things are yet to be answered, there is one thing to remember. The original exotic bar was born out of the Great Depression – Don The Beachcomber! It is with his spirit that I’d like you to listen to this interview with Jason Alexander (aka Tiki Commando) and Tommie Selmon of Devil’s Reef in Tacoma, Washington. Jason and I have been friends for years, but have never met in-person until this interview. And he’s exactly the kind of guy you want at the bar when this crisis is over with – a guy cut from the same cloth as Donn Beach himself. He’s traveled the world as a Marine, lives on a boat, and is a perfectionist about his drinks – constantly fiddling with cocktails until there are several different “improved” versions. When times get rough, it’s time for an escape. So, enter the depths of Devil’s Reef and take the Third Oath.
